About Us

The Greater Richmond High School Chess League is a competitive organization of high school chess teams in the Richmond, Virginia metropolitan area. The schools play a home-and-home divisional schedule of four-player team matches on weekday afternoons during the school year, with divisional playoff matches and a league championship match in the spring.

The GRHSCL was organized in 2004 by Mr. Kevin Butler and his son Thomas Butler, then a student at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School, with assistance from the Maggie L. Walker Chess Club and Mr. Peter Hopkins of the Virginia Scholastic Chess Association. Fourteen area high school teams participated in the inaugural 2004-2005 season.

In 2009, Mr. Brian Carr, a teacher at Atlee High School in Hanover County, became the Director of the GRHSCL, and was instrumental in starting leagues in other areas of Virginia, including Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia.

Mr. James Steincamp, a Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School parent, organized and directed the GRHSCL for two seasons beginning with the 2013-2014 school year.

After a two year hiatus, Mr. Joseph Palen, a teacher at Deep Run High School, revived the league for the 2017-2018 season.
